The Speech Guaranteeing a McCain Presidency

6/25/08 McCain Update: Well, there you have it! Five days after I emailed him a link to this, he actually delivered the speech today. He labeled his energy strategy as the Lexington Project. His speechwriter did a much better job than me, but it may not have been bold enough. The problem with it is that he continues to think that part of the problem is oil speculators in the futures market, that new technologies and energy resources need government subsidies and that cap-and-trade is part of the solution. He really needs to grab Joe Lieberman and wander down to Jim Inhofe's office for a come-to-Jesus meeting on "climate change". McCain is killing his chances to win by continuing to think that the climate can be controlled through carbon dioxide limits and penalties. Anyway, here it is...

6/24/08 McCain Update: I heard Hugh Hewitt interviewing John McCain today. Here's what he said, "
We can fix it, we can do it…. Americans put people on the moon. We can do this, and we’ve got to give Americans hope and optimism. And we can give them immediate relief on the gas tax, but we can let the world know that we will become independent of foreign oil. And that will have an effect, I believe, on the price of oil, if they know that we’re dead serious, and we’re going to do it. America can do it, and we must do it." I'm not crazy enough to think that he read this post (although I did forward him a link), but at least he seems to be getting the message.

Senator McCain,

I have taken the liberty to put together a speech for you that will ensure your victory in November – if you actually deliver it. Now, I’m not a trained speechwriter, but I have included the key content that you will need. I suggest you take one of your speechwriters and have them improve on it. I won’t be offended if you spruce it up!

Here you go…

My friends and fellow Americans,

I am here today to introduce three key strategies that will be the cornerstone of a John McCain presidency. America is facing high energy costs, economic struggles and the ongoing threat of terrorism. I plan to address these issues and commit my presidency to solving them.

First, I am setting a goal for this country to become energy independent by the end of the next decade. Just as President Kennedy launched the space race by challenging the country to put a man on the moon by the end of 1969, I am initiating the “energy race” that will put America in sole control of her energy needs by end of 2019 which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. American commitment, talent and innovation met the challenge to put a man on the moon. We can do the same in achieving the goal of energy independence.

The energy race will have a two-legged approach. We are going to get to the finish line by first unleashing the energy resources we have available in this country and second, by leveraging new technologies and renewable sources of energy.

We need to remove federal restrictions that currently limits American free enterprise from tapping into all of the energy resources we have available within our borders and in the waters off our coasts. We will need oil and other fossil fuels for many more years and it doesn’t make sense to be at the mercy of the other oil producing countries, especially when some of them support terrorism. We need to ensure a fast track for American companies to be able to explore, extract, refine and distribute our energy resources. This will mean moving hurdles to quickly approve permits and bypass unreasonable environmental restrictions. This includes rejecting any cap and trade restrictions, which I previously supported, but now realize, would only put a brake on our goal for energy independence. When the energy resources are located within specific states, these states will have the final say in determining if, when, how and where these resources will be tapped. The other resource we will expand on is nuclear energy. We need to open the door to putting dozens of nuclear power plants on line over the next decade.

The second leg of this strategy involves releasing the innovation of Americans to develop new technologies and find renewable resources that will eventually wean us off fossil fuels. This next statement may seem in conflict with that, but the first thing we need to do is repeal all of the government subsidies, rebates, etc. that currently prop up alternative energy resources. The current solar, battery, wind and bio-fuel technologies are not ready for prime time when matched against the fossil fuels. Continuing to subsidize them only slows down innovation that is needed to get them competing head-to-head with coal, oil and gas. I trust American free enterprise to find solutions that will allow us to achieve a significant reduction in the percentage of fossil fuels vs. renewables by the time we achieve energy independence during the next decade. Instead of subsidies, I will free up capital and let American ingenuity take on the challenge.

I will personally commit to the goal and set it in motion this summer by sponsoring legislation that repeals federal restrictions and opens the door to energy exploration and production. I encourage all of you to contact your Senators and Representatives and tell them to ensure that the legislation gets to the floor for vote. Since the Democrats currently control Congress, I don’t expect the first vote on this to be favorable, but it will give you a chance to see how of members of Congress, who are up for re-election in November, cast their votes. Make sure you also challenge new candidates running this year to tell you whether or not they support the race for energy independence, including the Democrat nominee for President.

My second strategy is to strengthen and grow the American economy by unleashing capital through significant reductions in taxes and federal spending. Corporations, small businesses, entrepreneurships and the individuals who make them up, are the economic engine of the country. I will push for significant income and capital gains tax reductions to help fuel the push for energy independence, strengthen the dollar, increase production and spur innovation. Along with that, I will do everything I can as President to stop wasteful, inefficient government spending. I will veto unnecessary spending bills and those packed with pork. I will also seek legislation that gives the President the ability to veto specific line items in funding bills and use this to strike down earmarks and other spending that the federal government should not be involved with. I believe that Americans should be making the decisions on how to spend their money, not having the federal government do it for them.

Finally, as Commander-in-Chief, I will make it my priority to protect this country and its citizens to the best of my ability. With God’s speed and the greatest military force on the planet, we will win the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and defeat Islamo-fascist terror on every front. I will also use every capability at my disposal to protect our citizens from another attack like 9/11. We will fully utilize our intelligence gathering and surveillance technologies to stop terrorist attacks before they unfold. I hate war, but I will not allow our enemies threaten our security and our liberty.

Over the next few months, I will be arranging for town hall meetings that will be held in several different states. I want to have a chance to meet with you to expand on the details of my strategies, as well as hear your questions and suggestions. My opponent was invited to share his views at these town hall meetings, but apparently has decided to join me in only one. I will still keep the door open if he wants to join me in the others. I would love to provide you with the contrast in our visions for this country. I will also be putting more details on my website and setting up a way for all of you to contribute your ideas on achieving energy independence, economic growth and winning the war against terrorism.

Good night and God Bless America.
